LENDOIRO'S SURPRISE: ANDRES GUARDADO

11 Jul 2007
-- Deportivo has made a surprising signing. The club has agreed to pay €7 million for Andrés Guardado, a young Mexican promise that was linked with Real Madrid and that was near to signing for PSV. The amount of the operation is also a record in Mexico.

Andrés Guardado (20) was linked with Depor in the past, but nobody was expecting this surprising movement by Lendoiro. The Mexican youngster has been on the agenda of the European clubs since he impressed in the last World Cup in Germany. In fact, PSV Eindhoven was near to signing him. The Dutch club offered $8.23 million (€6 million) and his club -Atlas de Guadalajara- was near to accepting it.

Suddenly, Lendoiro appeared with a better offer: $9.61 million (€7 million) for the 75% of his rights. This information wasn't known until Tuesday and after a short press conference, the president of Atlas, Fernando Acosta Martínez, confirmed that the deal with Deportivo is official: "Just a few hours ago, we had the privilege to close the operation that will take our player, Andrés Guardado, to the old continent. We talked with PSV, and more recently with Deportivo, and everything ended well for everybody. The operation is done and we only still have to fulfill a detail, surely it will be accomplished during the next week. The operation is for seven million euro, and we will keep the 25% of the player." It was also reported that Depor will make the payment in four parts during the next 18 months.

This is a record in the transfer history in Mexico, but Acosta affirms that it's worthy: "It isn't an expensive operation, in fact I believe that it was cheap. We must remember the conditions that Andrés possess. He is a player with a national team level. A key piece in the team. I'm sure that if he would have a different nationality, his value would be increased by five more millions."

According to the new agency Notimex, the operation was closed at 2 AM in the morning in Mexico (10 AM Central time in Europe). The agent of the player -Mario Ordiales- also talked during the press conference given by Atlas, he said that: "The player has been noticed about the deal and he is happy about it."

Ordiales also expressed his satisfaction for the deal: "It wasn't an easy choice for the club, we have to recognise that, but finally, the dream of Andrés has been fulfilled. The player has been informed in his hotel room, and we already sent him the contract in order to sign it. I believe that's a matter of one week in order to solve everything."

The news agency EFE reported that the contract for Guardado will be for five years. He is currently participating with Mexico in the Copa America, and it's expected that he will join the pre-season with the squad in the next week. If you want to know more about Andrés Guardado, click [here]

MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE NEGOTIATIONS FOR GUARDADO

12 Jul 2007 -- The signing of Andrés Guardado has generated a lot of positive reaction in La Coruña and Mexico. But the fans and the media agree that the youngster is an important addition to Lotina's squad. The player also expressed his happiness with his new club.

Guardado's transfer to Deportivo caused a lot of surprise in Mexico. Everybody was expecting to see this young midfielder sign for PSV Eindhoven, but Lendoiro's manoeuvres changed everything in a couple of days. There are some discrepancies about the price of the transfer. In Mexico, Fernando Acosta Martínez (Atlas president) said that the deal is worth € 7 million and that his team will keep 25 per cent of the player. He also said that the Galician club will pay for the transfer in four installments over the next 18 months.

But Depor Sport disputed this statement in Wednesday's issue. The paper wrote that Deportivo would pay € 7 million for 100 per cent of the player’s rights by making a single cash payment for 75 per cent (€5.25 million) of these rights and acquiring the other 25 per cent over the next 3 years. If Deportivo decides to sell the midfielder within the next 3 years, the Galicians will have to pay Atlas 25 per cent of the cost of the transfer, unless he is sold for less than €7 million, in which case Depor would only pay the 25% they still owe (€1.75 million).

Also unconfirmed is the duration of Guardado’s contract. Depor Sport wrote that he will sign a three-year contract, but the Mexican media reported that he signed a deal for four years.

Guardado didn't want to give too many details to the Mexican media, preferring instead to concentrate on the Copa America semi-finals. However, he told El Universal that the advice of Barcelona defender and compatriot Rafael Marquez helped him make the decision to come to Spain. "I had a conversation with Márquez, and he said that this was the best alternative in a professional sense, and the truth is that I accepted his advice. Besides, the financial incentive was the better one for Atlas."

The midfielder also said that he chose this decision because it was the best thing for him and his wife. "Personally, I would be more comfortable in Spain since the language and the traditions are very similar to those in Mexico. My family is also happy. My wife was afraid to go to Holland because we would be alone and unable to speak the language, but in Spain at least we will able to communicate with others. Besides, it will be easier to speak with my teammates and the coach."

Finally, Guardado admitted that he cried when his agent told him the good news. "The truth is that I was crying, but it was out of excitement, because this is the result of a great effort. It's the realization of one of my dreams since I was a kid, and now I have to demonstrate why they signed me."

GUARDADO: "I WILL LIKE TO SEE ME CONSOLIDATING A PLACE IN EUROPE WITH DEPOR"

14 Jul 2007 -- Andrés Guardado knows that Deportivo's fans have high expectations of him. The first signing of the season talked with newspaper La Opinión a Coruña about his transfer to the European football. The Mexican player analysed his style of playing and he is also hoping to win a place in Lotina's squad.

Q: Why did you chose Depor?
A: I always wanted to play in Spain, it's the place where the best league in the world is, I had that in mind when I took the decision. To be going to one of the best teams in Spain is something that motivates me, although I don't want to despise PSV, a club that's also important.

Q: Rafael Márquez talked with you about this move, what references did he gave to you?
A: He talked great things about Deportivo. He told me that's a great club, one that's playing with a lot of youngsters in the squad, also that the city is pretty and that's an institution with a large base of fans. I know that people are faithful over there. This last year, the things weren't fine for them, but it's always been a protagonist, it has been fighting for the first five or six places in the table.

Q: Is that the objective for the next season?
A: We must go game by game, but we must trust in ourselves knowing that we are as good as any other rival, and that we can face any team and beat it. Every time that you enter into a competition, is to win it. If not, better is to not enter. That's the mentality that we must have in order to aspire to something big.

Q: Are you aspiring to be a leader in your new team?
A: Everything in life, and also in football, requires a process. I know that people expect big things from me, but there's always a period of adaptation. I will try to get used in a short period, but my place in the squad will depend of the people and will be according to my performance inside the pitch. The fans are the ones that put the players up or down. I hope that people will be happy with my work and that in one year, they would be able to consider me as a reference in the institution.

Q: Do you see Deportivo as a springboard in order to jump to a bigger club in the future?
A: For the moment, no. I will like to win a place in Deportivo and to see me consolidating a place in the European football with this team. That would be important for me. What I intend is, to fulfill the four years of contract.

Q: What do you know about Miguel Ángel Lotina?
A: I know that he has a lot of seasons training in Primera, and that everybody knows him in Spain. People talk good things about him. Besides, he is the one that's taking me there, and I'm thankful for it.

Q: Any reference you have about your new team mates?
A: About the game, nothing. I know some things, what I read in Internet. They say that Riki is very good. Valerón is a great player, but he is injured. Also Coloccini, who might go out of the team... I know that there are good players.

Q: You faced Messi on Wednesday, is true that your style is similar?
A: It's true that they compare me with him, but I am a player with a warrior attitude, and that's able to do other things in a defensive aspect. He is a great player, a 'crack', and he does great things upfront. He has his qualities in the attacking zone, but I'm a more defensive player. I not only attack, I always know how to defend. Besides, we are different in the offensive aspect. He is more explosive. He is involved in the attacking zone and sometimes, he plays as a forward. Yes, we are a little different.

Q: You also score goals, but usually from long-distance, no?
A: Yes, the six goals that I scored in the Mexican league were from long distance. In Atlas, I was practically a side defender and I usually cross the left side coming from behind. The truth is that I don't enjoy too many chances to score inside the area. That's why all my goals are from long-distance.

Q: Will you do it in Spain?
A: I don't know. I will try to win a place in the squad and I will work where the coach wants. Football in Spain is practised making a lot of combinations. There are good players, with quality. I will try to be adapted really fast and I will try to do the same things that I do in here. I want to demonstrate why they signed me.

Q: Do you consider yourself as a mature person although you are only 20?
A: I always had my feet on the ground. I like to be surrounded by my family and to ask for their advice. I will travel there with my wife, and we will try to get used as soon as possible.
