Juan Carlos Valerón could be living his last season at Deportivo’s first squad and also as a professional player; he talked to Depor Sport about the subject and also analysed the season that’s about to begin.

Q: You’re starting a year of uncertainty, because it could be the last one in your career. Are you worried?
A: No, it isn’t worrying me. I just want to do things, also to help the team in the best possible way and focus on that. Later we will see what happens.

Q: But what do you think it may happen? I guess you will love to have one more year…
A: In that sense you always want to play, especially if you see yourself having the conditions to continue competing at the highest level. Of course you will like to continue, but it is something that doesn’t depend on me and for that reason we must wait and we’ll see.

Q: You say it doesn’t depend on you, I guess because you want to see the minutes you need to see what’s going on throughout the season.
A: Yes, especially because the coach has an opinion on this, and it’s that I won’t force things up if the coach, maybe, believes that my time to help the team on the pitch is over. It is something that will be seen with the pass of the time and we must wait for those opinions and decisions. If in the other hand the coach considers that I can be helpful to the team, then it will determine the situation.

Q: Do you plan to talk to Lotina, or will you take a decision by yourself with the pass of time?
A: Not by myself, but these things will come out naturally, and I guess that we’ll discuss it in a very natural way. We never had a problem with the coach and it will never happen. I always said that if I’m here is to help, and in that sense if he thinks that my time has passed, then it will be a natural thing.

Q: Will be hard to take the decision of leaving the game
A: Surely it will be hard, but sometimes you have to take the right decision not only thinking of you, but of the club. In that sense I always tried to take the best decision for everybody.

Q: So, are you assuming this year as any other season?
A: Yes, throughout my career I never tried to feel conditioned. Last year was also different, because my contract was ending and always tried to act in the same way. This year I will do the same, which is to give my best effort, to offer my best football and bring all that I can to the team.

Q: Is your goal for this season to keep enjoying football?
A: Evidently. If I don’t enjoy it then it will be the worst thing that can happen to a player. Beyond been playing more or less, you always want to enjoy being there, feeling you can bring new things on the pitch. I never lose the hope, and want to keep bringing my best football to the team.

Q: What do you think of the new signings and the composition of the new team?
A: The sensation that we have is that, despite already having a good team, we have signed players that will be helpful in order to have a more solid squad. Surely we have signed players for the positions where we were in need and it will be helpful. We have good sensations and now we only need to transmit this in order to succeed.

Q: With these news signings, do you have more competence now?
A: Yes, but it isn’t a new thing for me. All my life I’ve been with great players and that’s good for everybody. The important thing is to see everybody giving their best. Later we have a coach and he´ll search the best solutions for the team.

Q: Taking in mind what happened at the end of the last second round, do you think the team will suffer on the new campaign?
A: I believe we must forget a bit the last second round. It’s always important to learn from the past and to realize the season is long, there are ups and downs and in the end you end in the place you deserve. On the past year the first round was good in terms of results, but I do believe it wasn’t as good as everybody thinks, neither the second was so bad. I just think it’s important to search for a balance, to be a regular team, to know what things are fine and what our errors are.

Q: With the exit of some veterans the average age of the team has decreased, but it’s a different thing compared to the first season of Lotina.
A: Yes, there was a year when a lot of young people arrived and the change was clearer, but maybe now things are more natural. Some people are leaving, others are arriving and we are keeping people with experience, and that helps to not see the youngest people having the biggest responsibility.

Q: On this year what do you expect from the people at the youth teams?
A: We will have to wait and see what happens during the campaign. In recent years, especially on the past season, a lot of young people from the bottom have been training with us, and are joining us now at the first team and that’s good. There will be some years in which things will be clearer, and others in which you will need to give time to the youngsters in order to evolve and grow up. This is a thing that the coaches control and that needs a slow progress.
