SEASON 2006/2007: PLAYERS REVIEW

20 Jun 2007 -- DLC.com presents a small review of the players performance during the present season. Twenty six players plus two Fabril's youngsters were able to participate in la liga and also in copa. 16 of this 28 men obtained a note that was between Irregular and Decent, a clear reflect of the results achieved by the squad. Also, there were only four excellent notes, one was the keeper and the other four were defenders.

Dudu Aouate (3,420 minutes played in la liga): Excellent. There was a big expectation in order to see the replacement of Molina, and the Israeli keeper hasn't defrauded the public. He was the only player that performed during the fully 38 matches and he was always a guarantee in Depor's net. Maybe his best demonstration occurred in Zaragoza for la liga, Depor drew that game (1-1) and the hero was Aouate with his ten crucial saves. At the end, the ex-Racing keeper made 104 saves during the whole liga campaign, a number that represents the seventh best mark in the competition.

Gustavo Munúa (0): Poor. Once again, the Uruguayan followed the actions from the bench. Caparrós preferred the option of Aouate and Munúa was condemned to only take part of the copa games. However, Munúa made a crucial appearance in the series with Racing Santander, he gave the pass to the second round after he stopped three penalties.

Manuel Pablo (1,185): Irregular. It seems that the captain's role is possessing a curse since Fran left Deportivo. Scaloni was the first one that suffered this misfortune, and now it has been the turn of Manuel Pablo. The Canarian defender only played 15 games on the liga season. Relegated by Barragán, Manuel Pablo started the campaign on the bench, later he gain the confidence of Caparrós and was the starting option at the right back during four months (between matchday 12 and 26), but later he was once again relegated to a secondary role, this time by Coloccini.

Antonio Barragán (912): Decent. The Galician is one of the gems of Babydepor, he was the starting option for the right back during the first eight liga matches, suddenly Caparrós realised that Barragán still has to grow as a defender, a situation that caused his relegation to the bench. At the end, Barragán only played 137 minutes during the second round of the tournament. At least he left sparkles of his potential with his two impressive goals against Real Sociedad and Getafe.

Fabricio Coloccini (2,204): Solid. The Argentinean was the roller coaster of the season. He was an important piece in midfield during the first fourteen liga games, time in which he played as a defensive pivote. Suddenly Coloccini was left out of the team, apparently because he was on the transfer market. He returned until matchday 24, this time to cover the right side of the defence. His job can be described as good, although sometimes he seemed to be out of place.

Jorge Andrade (1,904): Excellent. The Portuguese missed the half of the season for a knee injury. But he returned to the team in matchday 16 and everything changed. Defence was a more secure place when he was on the pitch. His presence is one of the keys to understand the improvement of Deportivo during the second round in la liga. The Portuguese ended the season with a red card after just fourteen minutes in the pitch, a sad good bye since he is near to be transferred to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Albert Lopo (2,696): Excellent. Maybe the best newcomer of the season. His experience in Primera was vital for Deportivo. Although he committed some mistakes -like the last-minute penalty against Betis- the Catalan was always a crucial piece in Caparrós's scheme. He could had more minutes in the team, but an injury and the competition inside the squad left him out of the starting eleven during some weeks (between matchday 16 and 19). But Lopo returned in order to reclaim his place alongside Andrade. He even had time to score a decisive goal in the game with Osasuna (1-0). Curiously, he was the most booked player of the team (10 yellow cards), he was also the player with more passes intercepted in Deportivo: 36 -seventh in la liga in this department. And he was also the defender with more fouls committed (57).

Alvaro Arbeloa (1,762): Excellent. Without doubt, the surprise of the season. Everybody was expecting to see this rookie occupying a slot in the bench, but the Salamanca-born defender showed an impressing maturity on the pitch. He just missed 38 minutes during the first 20 liga matches, sometimes he performed as central defender and sometimes as a side defender. Few mistakes and a solid attitude. His work called the attention of Rafa Benítez in Liverpool and Arbeloa was the surprising transfer during the winter window. He started the season as a player coming from Segunda (Real Madrid B), and he ended the campaign playing in the Champions League Final. A dramatic change that demonstrates that he's a rasing star in Spain.

Juanma (569): Poor. He started the season injured (pubalgy), perhaps that's why he struggled in order to find the rhythm of the squad. It was one of the stones in Caparrós's team during the past season, but this time he just played seven liga games (he was sent off in two opportunities). He always gave the sensation of been timingless and uncoordinated with his team-mates in defence.

Joan Capdevila (3,036): Irregular. He had his bad and good moments. Without doubt, his best game was against Villarreal (matchday 03), a match in which he scored the two goals of Depor. But in other occasions he showed a lack of concentration on the pitch, like in the copa game with Sevilla at the Riazor, in that opportunity he committed a huge mistake when he was taking a corner-kick, an error that cost a goal and maybe the pass to the final. He was the player with more minutes after Aoaute.

Filipe Luis (992): Irregular. He was supposed to be the replacement for Capdevila at the left back, but the Brazilian didn't play too often during the season, he just participated in five complete games in la liga. It seemed that Caparrós never found the perfect place for him, sometimes he was used as a left back and during other occasions as a left winger. His best moment was in copa when he scored a goal against Valladolid during the quarterfinals.

Adrián López 'Piscu' (0): (-) Without qualification. He and Rubén Rivera were the only Fabril's youngsters that played an official game with the first squad. Piscu didn't play in la liga, he just appeared twice as a substitute in the copa series with Mallorca. Curiously, Caparrós said that Piscu would replace Arbeloa after he went to Liverpool, but the youngster continued in Fabril, maybe it was because the central defender was a key piece in the promotion aspirations of Deportivo B.

Aldo Duscher (941): Decent. Although he made a good job, the participation of Duscher in the team was inconsistent, mainly because he suffered new muscular injuries that left him out of action during several weeks. That's why he only played in 15 matches on the liga campaign. But his return to midfield during the second round was one of the reasons that explains the good moment lived by Deportivo during that particular period.

Juan Rodríguez (2,177): : Poor. It was expected that this young veteran would be a point of reference in the squad, but he ended to be like the majority of players in the team: inconsistent. His debut was hopeful after he scored a goal in the 3-2 win over Zaragoza, he participated in the following six matches as starter, later Caparrós get tired of him and the Andalucian spent the rest of the campaign going in and out of the lineups. Maybe his inconsistent behaviour on the pitch was caused by Caparrós's experiments. The Sevillan trainer used him as a playmaker, defensive pivote and even as a winger. Juan Rodríguez was also Depor's midfielder with more shots on goal: 13 - 27th in la liga , and the Depor's player with more fouls committed (64).

Sergio (1,959): Poor. Once again, the Catalan player defrauded with his performance. He wasn't the guide that Deportivo was needing on the pitch, neither the defensive first line that Caparrós likes to see in his midfielders. At least, the Sevillan coach realised about the situation and Sergio spent more time on the bench than on the pitch. The Catalan only played 26 games as starter in la liga, this is his lowest number since he arrived to Depor. He ended the season with an impressive goal against his ex-team, RCD Espanyol.

De Guzmán (1,445): Solid. The Canadian international is without doubt the most willing player in the team. He ran and fought for every ball in midfield. The main question is why Caparrós awaited until matchday 15 (Vs. Athletic Bilbao) in order to use this short but powerful player. After the match against the Basques, De Guzmán only missed two liga games due to an injury, one for suspension, and two more due to his participation in the Gold Cup. Another reason why Deportivo raised its performance during the second part of the season.

Valerón: (3) (-) Without qualification. Unfortunate, that's the best way to describe his season. Everybody was on their feet when Valerón entered to the pitch during the home game against Real Madrid, but he only played three minutes on the season, the knee of the Canarian playmaker wasn't healed and he had to go trough a new surgery. Maybe he will never comeback.

Iago: (264) Decent. The best product of the past campaign was sidelined by Caparrós on this occasion. The Sevillan coach was trusting in other options like Verdú or Juan Rodríguez, and the initial idea was to sent him on loan, but the operation didn't succeeded and the Galician youngster had to expend the season sited on the bench. But Iago demonstrated his qualities during the few minutes that he played in la liga, a demonstration of this was his magnificent goal against Gimnástic. A step back in the career of this Galician promise.

Joan Verdú (1,364): Irregular. This young talent showed interesting skills on the pitch, like when he scored a beautiful goal against Villarreal at El Madrigal. But in other occasions he seemed doubtful, like not having a clue about what he was doing on the pitch. Caparrós never found the correct place for him, the Catalan performed sometimes as playmaker and in other opportunities as a offensive midfielder and even as a winger. The curiosity is that Depor only won one of the ten games in which Verdú appeared as starter.

Fábian Estoyanoff (1,631): Irregular. The Uruguayan gave good demonstrations on the pitch, curiously, the major part of this presentations occurred when he jumped to the grass as a substitute (10 of the 28 games that he played), like when he changed the situation in the home game against Barcelona, that's why Estoyanoff was described as the 'revulsive' of the squad. The problem is that the Uruguayan winger was irregular. Sometimes his presence was irrelevant, mainly because his crosses never reached the target. 'Lolo' also presented a strong character on the games, a fact that caused him to see nine yellow cards plus an expulsion.

Pablo Alvarez (343): Irregular. He started the season injured, and according to Caparrós, the Galician winger would be a 'winter reinforcement' for Deportivo after his impressive debut in copa (scoring a goal in the 4-1 win over Valladolid). But he mysteriously disappeared from the lineups during the major part of the second round in la liga. Besides, during the few chances that he had after his promising debut, 'the shark' didn't show its teeth.

Cristian Hidalgo (2,015): Solid. Many people doesn't like his skills, the Catalan has been accused for been inconsistent during the games, but the true is that Cristian was one of the players that put more will and passion over the grass. It was normal to see him running and helping in the defensive tasks of the squad. It's also true that he still has to improve a lot of things like the effectiveness in his crosses, but it must be remembered that this youngster is coming from Segunda B, a very inferior scenario. He should be improving with time. The best moment of Cristian was the home game with Real Madrid, a confrontation in which he debuted as scorer in Primera.

Riki (2,233): Irregular. He was the second most fouled striker in la liga (124 infractions against him) and it's possible to say that he spent more time on the ground than playing with the ball. There were big expectations over his shoulders, but the true is that the most expensive signing of the season was a huge disappointed since he only scored three goals. But he isn't the only guilty on this, it must be remembered that the Madrilenian was sacrificed since he played a big part of the season as a right winger after he was playing as second striker in Getafe.

Javier Arizmendi (2,721): Decent. The Madrilenian completed his first complete season in Depor, he left positive sensations in some matches, but he was unnoticed in several games. Without doubt, Arizmendi is capable of everything, he can make an incredible play leaving the whole Real Madrid's defence on the ground -including Cannavaro, the best player according to FIFA- just to end shooting to the post when the easiest thing was to score the goal. He was also the Depor's striker that made more shots on goal: 20 -26th in la liga, and the pichichi of the squad with five goals, the lowest number in decades.

Rodolfo Bodipo (265): Decent. He begun the season as a normal starter, but soon he suffered a serious knee injury. He returned until the campaign was ending and when the squad seemed to be defeated and without will. The Guinean striker refreshed the striking zone and scored two goals during the last five games of the season. His presence could be vital for the next campaign.

Sebastián Taborda (513) Irregular. The 'eternal' injured man of Deportivo. As it happened on the past season, he spent more time out due to physical reasons than playing on the pitch. The Uruguayan striker only scored one goal, and even had a fight with a reporter, an incident that cost him a visit to court.

Adrián López (750) Decent. One of the teenagers in la liga. Nobody knew what to expect from this boy after he came from Real Oviedo. He seemed like shy, but soon he showed to be the opposite case with his shamelessly behaviour with the ball. His best moment was without doubt the few minutes that he played against Barcelona at the Camp Nou, an occasion in which he scored a good goal and called the attention of the Spanish papers. Without doubt a promising player for the future.

Rubén Rivera (56): Decent. He made an instantaneous impact in Depor when he debuted in the copa game against Valladolid after he scored a goal. Soon, he was enjoying of more opportunities, but he wasn't able to shine during this occasions. He returned to Fabril and leaded the promotion aspirations of Deportivo B.
