SEASON 2006/2007: REVIEWING THE MATCHES

19 Jun 2007 -- It was a roller coaster season. Depor was able to do the best just to do the worst in the following game. At the end, the squad achieved the permanence in Primera eight matchdays before la liga ended. Maybe the most painful situation occurred in copa, the Galicians made a decent participation, but two disastrous presentations against Sevilla finished the dream of achieving a title in the year of the centenary.

There was a big concern about the performance that 'Babydepor' would do in the season, it was feared that its lack of experience could cause an unthinkable thing until this year: the relegation to Segunda. But these negative thoughts disappeared after Deportivo achieved the first win of the season during the debut game in la liga: 3-2 Vs. Zaragoza. A positive result taking in mind that Zaragoza reinforced the squad with important players like Diogo, Aimar or D'Alessandro.

The doubts returned after Deportivo played awful in the visits to Mallorca (0-0), Levante (0-2) and Betis (1-1). Presentations that gave the first signs of weakness in a team that always faced several difficulties when it was playing outside home. Despite the situation, everybody was happy because the team continued to add victories at the Riazor: 2-0 Vs. Villarreal, 2-0 Vs. Real Sociedad and 1-0 Vs. Atlético Madrid.

After the first seven matches in la liga, the team was occupying a UEFA spot thanks to its four straight wins at home, this successful period was completed with the 1-0 victory over Racing Santander in the first-leg match for copa del rey. It was the end of October, and everything was optimistic inside the club.

But everything changed during the following two months. Caparrós's team spent ten matches without achieving a victory (nine in liga and one in copa), an unseen thing in the club during the previous seasons. This period saw Deportivo defeated in six opportunities: 0-2 Vs. Getafe, 0-1 Vs. Celta, 1-4 Vs. Osasuna, 0-4 Vs. Valencia, 0-2 Vs. Athletic Bilbao and 0-4 Vs. . Meanwhile, the team only achieved three draws during the same period: 1-1 Vs. Barcelona, 0-0 Vs. and 0-0 Vs. .

Besides, the team suffered in order to achieve the qualification to the last eight round in copa del rey. Depor lost the second-leg against Racing (0-1), and the match had to go to extra-times, since the score didn't change during the following 30 minutes, it had to reach the series of penalties, an instance in which the Galicians achieved the pass thanks to goalkeeper Munúa.

It was a drastic change for the club. The team went from occupying a European position to be four points away from the relegation zone. A huge change that occurred during just two months. Without doubt, the negative series of results during these two months are the main reason why Depor wasn't able to end the campaign in a European place.

The divergence of the moment was marked in two particular periods: at the beginning of November, Depor was making one of its best matches of the season in the home draw with Barcelona, a match in which the squad showed the greater of its ambitions and a huge will, but this spirit disappeared instantly during the following games. The squad ended December in its worst moment, scoring zero goals and allowing ten during the last four liga matches of the year.

And Depor bounced back during 2007, the first victim was none other than Real Madrid (2-0). The Galicians started the year with the 'traditional' victory at home over the Madrilian rival. A new and radical change was seen in the squad, the players seemed refreshed and the combative spirit returned into Caparrós's team.

The victory over Real Madrid was followed by a positive mark of eleven consecutive games without suffering a defeat (seven in liga and four in copa). This moment of greatness included three victories in la liga: 1-0 Vs. Mallorca, 2-0 Vs. Villarreal and 1-0 Vs. Real Sociedad, these last two were the first ones achieved playing outside of Riazor, the another four liga games ended in a draw: 1-1 Vs. Recreativo, 0-0 Vs. Espanyol, 1-1 Vs. Zaragoza and 0-0 Vs. Levante.

Added to this, the Galicians achieved the pass to quarterfinals in copa del rey after they eliminated Mallorca in the last eight round (results: 2-1 and 1-1) and later they earned the ticket to semi-finals after the squad eliminated Valladolid (results: 4-1 and 1-1). The 4-1 win over Valladolid was important for Deportivo, firstly because it was achieved against a powerful team that was dominating Segunda, and secondly because it was the game in which Depor scored the highest number of goals during a single match: 4.

But this period wasn't marked by the number of goals that the team scored, contrary to this, it was emphasised by the work made in defence. During January and February, the team only allowed two goals during eight matches in la liga, a statistic without comparison in Europe. The explanation for this situation is the return of Andrade to the lineups, the confirmation of Lopo, the reappearance of De Guzmán and Duscher and the movement of Coloccini to the right back.

And once again, Deportivo went from the top to the bottom. During March and April, the squad returned to achieving negative results. Firstly Caparrós's team lost five of nine matches in la liga: 0-1 Vs. Betis, 0-2 Vs. Atlético Madrid, 1-2 Vs. Barcelona, 0-1 Vs. Celta and 1-2 Vs. Valencia. Secondly, the Galician team lost the semi-final series in copa del rey against Sevilla, two disastrous games that ended with an aggregate score of 0-5 (0-3 and 0-2).

The series against Sevilla also marked the end of the 'romance' between Depor's fans and coach Joaquín Caparrós. The Utrera-born trainer made unfortunate declarations one day before the match was played ("If Depor is eliminated, I will go with the peña of Utrera to the final in order to support Sevilla"), and the fans became furious. A repulsion that was worsened after the squad was humiliated by the same Sevilla at the Riazor (0-3). The police even had to protect Caparrós after the game ended.

At least the team was able to add 10 of 27 possible points during this period of nine matches. A fact that was possible thanks to the performance at the Riazor - nine of this ten points were conquered at home: 1-0 Vs. Getafe, 1-0 Vs. Gimnástic, 1-0 Vs. Osasuna and a 0-0 draw with Racing Santander at El Sardinero. Results that helped to achieve the new objective of the season: the permanence in Primera.

Without new objectives to be fulfilled, the squad faced the months of May and June as a pre-vacation period. Deportivo was only able to add four point during the last five games of the season. First it was the 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés, later the Galician squad suffered three consecutive defeats: 1-2 Vs. Sevilla, 1-3 Vs. Real Madrid and the most humiliating result of the season: 2-5 Vs. Recreativo at home. At least the squad was able to end the season with a victory: 3-1 over Espanyol. Curiously, Depor only scored three goals in a single liga game during two opportunities: the first and the last game of the season. Without doubt a roller coaster.
