SEASON 2006/2007: STATISTICS

20 Jun 2007 -- Depor's numbers during the 2006/2007 campaign are light-years from the marks achieved during the golden era lived with Arsenio Iglesias and Irureta. It was one of the worst years in terms of points conquered, number of victories and defeats, statistics as visitors and the number of goals scored. At least the Galician team presented a positive performance as a home team and conquered a new record of clean sheets.

The season of the Galician squad can easily be described as 'disastrous'. Depor broke several negative records and its game was always described by the papers as boring. Four statistical aspects can help in order to analyse the situation:

1- POINTS CONQUERED: THE WORST MARK IN 15 YEARS
For the season 2006/2007, Deportivo only added 47 points in 38 matches, that's the worst mark in 15 years. More precisely, it's the worst number since Deportivo returned to first division during the season 1991/1992, at that time the squad ended in the 17th place with only 31 points in 38 matches. The average of points conquered between the seasons 1992/1993 and 2005/2006 was of 62 points, meaning that Depor ended the season 15 points under the average of the past 14 years.

It must be reminded that until the season 1995/1996, each victory was rewarded with only two points, while the present tournaments are giving three points for each win achieved. Taking in mind this situation, is possible to make a new analysis. If we divide the points conquered in each season by the maximum number of points that could be obtained, it's possible to obtain the percentage of effectiveness. Once again, the statistics shows that this is the worst season since the last promotion to Primera. Depor's percentage of effectiveness for the season 2006/2007 has been the lowest one during the last 15 years: 41.22% (47 points conquered / 114 points in dispute). The previous worst mark was the one saw in the 1991/1992 campaign: 40.78%.

2- NUMBER OF VICTORIES AND DEFEATS: ANOTHER RECORD
Deportivo only achieved twelve wins plus eleven draws on the liga season, the other fifteen games ended in defeats. This is the worst combination since the season 1991/1992, the one that meant the return to Primera. In that occasion, the squad only added eight victories plus fifteen draws and fifteen defeats. Since this particular campaign, Deportivo only ended a season with twelve victories during two opportunities: the 1997/1998 campaign (Depor ended 12th in the table), and the season 2004/2005 (8th).

But the most interesting fact are the number of defeats for the squad (15), during its 36 previous campaigns in Primera, Deportivo only suffered fifteen defeats during five opportunities: seasons 1951/1952, 1952/1953, 1955/1956, 1971/1972 and 1991/1992. While the squad suffered sixteen on the 1962/1963 campaign and eighteen on the season 1956/1957.

3- THE STATISTICS AS VISITORS: WORST MARK IN 15 YEARS
Deportivo only added thirteen points as visitors, once again it's the worst mark since the season 1991/1992. At that time the Galician team only conquered ten points in this condition. As it happened in the season that has just ended, the Galician squad was only able to conquer three wins as a visitor: 3-0 Vs. Espanyol, 2-1 Vs. Atlético Madrid and 1-0 Vs. Osasuna. While Depor's three wins outside home during the season 2006/2007 were: 1-0 Vs. Real Sociedad, 2-0 Vs. Villarreal and 3-1 Vs. Espanyol.

Meanwhile, Caparrós's squad was only able to score thirteen times playing outside of Riazor, this is the worst mark since the season 1972/1973 -the last time that Depor was relegated to Segunda- in that campaign the team was only able to score five goals in this condition. The worst record in the club's history occurred on the season 1964-1965, at that time Depor only conquered two goals outside home.

4- GOALS SCORED: THE WORST MARK IN 34 YEARS
This is the most worrying thing in Deportivo. The lack of goals is a reality that has been affecting the squad during recent years. The average of goals scored between the seasons 2000/2001 and 2003/2004 (the four first years in Champions League) was of 66.25 goals per campaign, a number that decreased to 46 on the 2004/2005 campaign and to 47 for the season 2005/2006.

In this way, the 32 goals conquered on the season 2006/2007 only means a new step back for Deportivo. It's the lowest number since the season 1972/1973 (22), in other words the worst record in 34 years. Besides, during the previous 36 campaigns in Primera, Depor has only scored less than 32 goals in five opportunities: 1964-1965 (18), 1966-1967 (25), 1969-1970 (25), 1971-1972 (28) and 1972-1973 (22).

Another interesting fact is the difference between the 'legendary' goalscorers of the club and the current strikers in the squad. Far are the times in which Bebeto was ending with 29 goals (season 1991/1992) or when Roy Makaay (29 goals in the 2002/2003 campaign) and Diego Tristán (21 on the season 2001/2002) were ending like the pichichis of la liga.

The current pichichi of the team was Javier Arizmendi with only five goals scored. Only in three opportunities the best scorer of the squad ended with the same number of goals or with a worst mark: Chapela II (5 goals on the season 1969/1970), Beci (4 on the 1971/1972 campaign) and Rubiñán (4 goals on the season 1972/1973).

THE GOOD NEWS
But there were also good news, Depor conquered 31 points at the Riazor, a number that has surpassed the marks of the past two seasons -25 on the 2004/2005 and 23 on the 2005/2006. Without doubt this is the main reason why Depor spent the season 2006/2007 without too much hurries.

The best zone of the team was the defensive line, Depor only allowed 45 goals, a mark that's sensibly inferior to the ones received during the first four years in which Depor played the Champions League -73 on the 2000/2001 campaign, 65 on the season 2001/2002, 67 on the 2002/2003 campaign, and 60 on the season 2003/2004.

And the number of goals allowed could be lower, but the huge defeats against Osasuna (1-4), Valencia (0-4), Sevilla (0-4) and Recreativo (2-5) have affected this statistic. Depor was also able to achieve 16 clean sheets in 38 matches. A mark that represents a club's record during the 37 campaigns that Deportivo has spent in Primera.
