VALERON STARTS PREPARING FOR HIS RETURN

05 Apr 2007 -- Juan Carlos Valerón is hopeful about recuperating from his latest knee operation. The Canarian playmaker held a press conference to give details about his rehabilitation process. It is unknown how long he will be out of action, but apparently it could be for one full year.

Valerón was operated on last Saturday, and the surgery consisted of replacing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. This ligament was replaced with one from a donor one, meaning that Valerón's knee has to cooperate with the new ligament. This explains why, at twelve months, the recuperation process is so long.

One of the doctors who performed the operation, Rafael Arriaza, explained the situation to reporters. "In this case, the biological factor is fundamental, it will determine the time that the player is out of action. Juan Carlos' body needs to properly incorporate the new ligament. It's a slow process, because this new part doesn’t come from his body. We are talking about a transplant. If everything goes well, we will have a new ligament, stability in the knee and a new player."

Later, Valerón explained his feelings after the operation. “I am hopeful and content, because it seems that everything is okay, although we have only just begun the hardest phase – the recuperation. I am seeing things as I saw them before the operation. We have to make our best effort and see if things work out in the end. If we fail, no problem. I just want to be able to play again."

Doctor Arriaza explained that the first phase of Valerón's recovery process will take place in his home of Arguineguín (Canary Islands). "He needs the support of his family. The wound needs to heal first, the ligament must integrate, and after all this is done, we will start physiotherapy."

Valerón also wanted to thank Mauro Silva, who visited him in the hospital. The Brazilian star is visiting La Coruña and was with Valerón at the hospital to lend his support. "Mauro has also gone through hard times because of injuries. His explanation gave me hope, because you realize that he survived this situation."

MAURO SILVA: "I WAS MISSING THE LOVE OF THE PEOPLE"

04 Apr 2007 -- Mauro Silva, the eternal captain of Deportivo, has finally returned to La Coruña. After two years of absence, the Brazilian is visiting the city for business reasons. He was received at the airport by several fans that were wishing to see him. Mauro talked with La Voz de Galicia about his sensations and his relationship with Galicia.

Q: What do you feel after two years?
A: It's a great joy for me, because an absence of two years is really hard to handle. La Coruña is a city that I like. Here I spent a big part of my life on here, my older son was born here and I was Champion of Spain, of America and of the world when I was on the club. I lived an intense life on here. For me is almost a miracle the way in which a young Brazilian had a perfect connection with a football club and also with this city. In La Coruña, I feel like being at home.

Q: What was the main thing that you were missing?
A: It's not only one thing. I was missing the treatment with the people, the support of the fans, the love. That support is more neutral when you are on the pitch, but on the street... you miss that lady in the street that's asking you: "How are you son?" like you were her grandson. What has marked me is the people that loves me. It's a candid relationship, like I was worn on here. Also the food, the beach... I spent a lot of years with the sight of the sea in front of my window.

Q: Do you have any object from the city in your house in Brazil?
A: I have a copy of the Hercules tower, trophies, and one photo from a game that we played in Sada, I will extend that picture at the size of the wall. Everything is there, yes.

Q: Is your style of life different in São Paulo?
A: The fact is that São Paulo isn't a tranquil city. The noise, the traffic, the style of life... everything is different. I was very comfortable in La Coruña. I was training in the morning, and in the afternoon I was sleeping. In Brazil, I don't have the time for this.

Q: But you were needing to return to your house?
A: My family was needing me, specially my mother. He was a widow at an early age, she was 40 and I was 12. After I started to play, the option of Deportivo arrived and it was hard to me to leave her alone. I was needing to go back, to enjoy of her and to see her enjoying of the grandsons. You can't have anything in life and it's necessary to choose.

Q: Will we see you in the future living in Spain?
A: That possibility exists. One day, sooner or later, it can happen. I don't discard that option.

Q: Do you have contacts with the Galician people on Brazil?
A: Yes, I like to visit the restaurant Porto Rubayae, its owner is from Galicia, and there are a lot of Galicians that visits São Paulo, as example when the Formula One visits the city. I was with several Galician people during an exhibition about Goya.

Q: I guess that also in your business, Mauro Silva Sports & Business Plan. How is that working?
A: Very good, with calm. Because I didn't learn how to play football in two days. I will have several meetings in La Coruña for real state reasons, it's a business that caught my attention. Since the inflation is going down, there's a lot of credit opportunities in Brazil, and the banks are starting to give loans for 20 years. I guess that the types of interest will go down in a 10% and that will facilitate the investment. We are at the beginning of a real state boom, like it happened in Spain.

Q: You should have a busy agenda, but will you make some room for Deportivo?
A: I want to visit my ex-partners in Abegondo, I also want to meet Caparrós. There's some people from my era that isn't there anymore, but I want to give my support to the team.

Q: Are you aware of Valerón's situation?
A: Yes and I am upset, but I want to cheer him up, because I also spent two years out of action, like it's happening to him, and I also suffered a third surgery in the leg. I know what is like.

Q: It was after the 1994 World Cup, isn't?
A: Yes, doctor Borrel operated me in Barcelona and like the case with Valerón, there were no guarantees about a possible comeback. But I enjoyed of another ten wonderful years in football, although I still have two nails in my knee. For this reason, you have to be positive. Always.

Q: How do you see this Depor?
A: Well, in a better place. To secure a place in Primera is giving the base for a tranquil future, and to build a competitive squad. I like to see them away from the relegation zone.

Q: Are you thinking in investing in the club?
A: My business are in Brazil. I want the best for Deportivo, but I have my own objectives.
