REVIEW: VALLADOLID 2 - DEPORTIVO 2 (LIGA)
03 Sep 2007 -- Deportivo clinched its first point of the season at the José Zorilla. One more time the Galicians were in troubles against a new-comer, because Valladolid dominated the game and was near to conqueri the final victory during the last minutes. However, this time something changengd: Lotina's squad improved its effectiveness up front and scored in two of its three opportunities.
BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Miguel Ángel Lotina surprised everybody with his 4-2-3-1 formation. Riki and Xisco were left on the bench, while Taborda and Verdú were starters. Guardado and Lafita were also in the starting eleven and Antonio Barragán played at the right-back position. In Valladolid, coach José Luis Mendilibar was trusting in the combination between Kome, Sesma and Llorente. A minute of silence was the tribute paid to the memory of Antonio Puerta.
FIRST HALF
As it happened during the game against Almería, the first 45 minutes were a disaster for Deportivo. Verdú was uncomfortable in his position of playmaker, sometimes he even appeared as the striker of the squad. Meanwhile, Taborda wasn't receiving any balls. Sergio was lost in midfield and Juan Rodríguez was facing a lot of troubles containing the game of the rival.
But on the opposite side, Valladolid was also having a lot of difficulties. Sisi never appeared on the right wing and all the game of Mendilibar’s team was based in Jonathan Sesma and Daniel Kome, the Cameroon player was the motor in his squad and the two occasions to score for the home side passed through his boots.
First, he assisted Llorente with the head, but the striker failed when he was trying to lift the ball over Aouate's head. The second chance ended in a goal for the home team, just seconds before the referee whistled the half-time. Kome took a corner-kick and Depor's defensive line lost the concentration as defender García Calvo appeared alone pushing the ball with the head.
Although Valladolid didn't do an extraordinary effort during the first half, they were deserving the win. Mendilibar's team was enjoying the ball possession and at least they were the side pushing with more will. In Depotivo everything was shadows, exactly the same image left in the debut with Almería.
SECOND HALF
There were no modifications in Deportivo, but Lotina ordered a tactical change over the pitch: Guardado and Lafita switched positions and the Galician side showed more application and spirit. Therefore, the first goal of the season arrived nine minutes after half-time. Manuel Pablo sent a high cross from the left and Sebastián Taborda was lucky enough to strike the ball with the neck, although the Uruguayan was in an uncomfortable position, his effort was strong enough to pass keeper Butelle.
The goal changed the scene and the game became more dynamic. Depor started to push and Barragán and Manuel Pablo begun to search with more frequency with crosses to Valladolid’s area, but Lotina's players weren't creating a clear change. Valladolid was also trying to win the game, Llorente had a chance when he headed a cross from Sisi, but Aouate was there to stop the ball.
Lotina changed his strategy once again, he replaced Lafita with Cristian and Guardado returned to the left wing while the Catalan was covering the right. But who scored first was Valladolid; Llorente and Sisi exchanged positions as the striker sent a cross that was received by the winger, then Sisi made a brilliant manoeuvre to surpass Coloccini and beat Aouate with a low shot.
But the reaction of Deportivo was immediate, Riki replaced Juan Rodríguez meaning that Verdú delayed his position while the Madrilian started to play as second striker, and it was the right decision because Riki scored five minutes later with the equalising goal. He found a lost ball in the edge of the area and sent a shot that hit García Calvo, the effort was transformed into a volley that surprised goalkeeper Butelle. Lotina tried to give an extra-push to his team with the entrance of De Guzman for Sergio, minutes before to the change, the Catalan was near to scoring when he sent a shot that Butelle contained. However, it was Valladolid who was close to winning the game during the last minutes. Ogbeche replaced Llorente and the Nigerian striker almost score the winning goal after he sent a shot that passed inches away from the right post.

The game of Deportivo continues to be grey although this time the squad was more effective, Lotina’s squad took advantage of its chances and scored in two of the three times that a shot on goal was made. Maybe the most worrying thing is that the defensive line -supposed to be the stronger point of Depor- has allowed five goals in two games, and it must be remembered that these confrontations were against recently promoted squads.
Now Lotina has two weeks in order to try to improve the concentration of his defenders. There are no liga games next weekend since the European national teams will play the EURO qualifying matches, the next match for Deportivo will be on September 16 against Betis (at the Riazor).
