LACK OF AIM

16 May 2007 -- The poor scoring record of Deportivo during this campaign is something that continues to call the attention of the media. The mark of 25 goals scored in 34 matches is the worst one in Spain, and also the second worst in Europe. It's also the worst scoring statistic in the club since the season 1972/1973, a year that represents the last time that Depor suffered a relegation to Segunda.

It's pretty obvious that the performance in defence is the main fact maintaining the club during the present season. After 34 matches in la liga, Deportivo has just scored 25 goals, while Caparrós's team has just allowed 34 goals. The mark of goals scored is the worst one in the competition. And it's also the second worst statistic between the top leagues in Europe. Only the last place in Germany, Borussia Monchengladbach, has scored less goals in the continent (23).

A notorious thing is that the clubs occupying the last places in the main leagues of Europe have scored more goals than Depor. In Germany, Mainz (32) and Achen (46) are surpassing the statistic of Depor after 33 matchdays. In England, Watford (29), Charlton Athletic (34) and Sheffield United (32) are also improving Depor's numbers, although they already completed the season -38 matches. In Italy, Ascoli (34), Messina (32) and Reggina (47) are also surpassing Depor's scoring mark. The same situation occurs with the last places in France: Troyes (35), Sedan (45) and Nantes (28)

The mark of 25 goals in 34 matches is also notorious in the club's history. It's the worst mark in the club in 34 years. The last time that Depor scored less goals was on the season 1972/1973. At that time, the team ended the campaign with just 22 goals in 34 matches (the tournament was conformed by 18 teams), a factor that caused the relegation to Segunda (the last one in the club's history).

Curiously, Deportivo has allowed just 34 goals after 34 matches. A mark that only Getafe (28), Atlético Madrid (29), Barcelona (30), Sevilla (32) and Valencia (32) are improving. Spanish clubs that are fighting for the European competitions. A similar situation occurs if a comparison with the other leagues is made. The clubs with less goals allowed are the ones fighting at the top places. Italy: Fiorentina (28), Roma (28), Milan (31), Lazio (31) and Inter Milan (33). England: Chelsea (24), Manchester United (27) and Liverpool (27). Germany: Schalke (31) and Stuttgart (36). France: Lyon (25), Rennes (28), Bordeaux (31) and Marseille (37).
