BOYCOTT

19 May 2007 -- The referees in Spain are furious with the competition committee. This instance gave a pardon to David Beckham after he saw the fifth yellow card of the season against Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid's officials put a lot of pressure over the committee since the following game for Capello's squad was an important one: Sevilla. The referees showed their lack of conformity with this measure and they intentionally annulled all the yellow cards that were saw on the past weekend - for non violent fouls, 62. A fact that will allow Capdevila to play against Sevilla.

A boycott is occurring in Spain. The referees in la liga are furious with the attitude of the competition committee and its incursion in their decisions, as it happened in the case with Beckham. For that reason, they 'sabotaged' the acts of the ten games that were played on the past weekend. Usually, the referee writes a detailed explanation about the reason why a player is booked, but in this occasion, the referees just wrote the phrase 'For anti-sporting behaviour'. But it only occurred in non-violent plays.

This explanation is easy to be refuted by the clubs during the appeals, the competition committee knew this and its members gave a step in advance: they annulled all the yellow cards that were saw during the weekend and they weren't involving a violent foul (62). As result of this, all the players that were booked for non-violent acts were pardoned. This means that the players that were accumulating five yellow cards were released from the suspension. That's the case of Joan Capdevila who saw two yellow cards for showing an 'anti-sporting behaviour' in the match with Athletic Bilbao (handling the ball and taking a free-kick without consent. In this way, the Catalan defender will be able to face Sevilla on Sunday (17h00). But the players that committed 'violent acts' weren't include in this measure, as example Munitis, who was sent off for hitting a rival, the competition committee has banned him for two matches.

The situation has started to generate protests in other clubs. On Sunday, Real Sociedad has to face Celta in a crucial game for the salvation. Celta was arriving to Anoeta with Baiano and Gustavo López suspended for anti-sporting behaviour, but now that the ban has been lifted, both players are able to face the Basque club. A situation that coach Miguel Ángel Lotina criticised: "The federation and la liga should have a meeting about this, they can change the rules on matchday 36."

Newspaper La Opinión a Coruña tried to talk with referees Bernardino González Vázquez and Alfonso Pérez Burrull about this issue, but they refused to talk about the subject. The Galician paper also wrote that the referees could continue with the protest during the weekend, but that the final decision would be taken during a meeting between the referees. How long will this boycott goes?
