REVIEW: REAL MADRID 3 - DEPORTIVO 1 (LA LIGA)

27 May 2007 -- Deportivo showed a positive image at the Bernabeú, however Caparrós's squad wasn't able to avoid a new defeat in la liga. Joan Capdevila scored what could be his last goal with Depor's shirt, but a mistake committed by the referee and two defensive errors ended the dream of the positive result. The European dreams are now mathematically over.

BEFORE THE MATCH
Both coaches presented the squad that everybody was expecting to see. Caparrós maintained the 4-2-3-1 formation that lost against Sevilla at the Riazor, the only novelty was Cristian who replaced Riki. In Real Madrid, coach Capello was trusting in the combination Robinho-Raúl-Van Nistelrooy in order to achieve the victory that would put the title one step closer.

FIRST HALF
Deportivo started the actions putting a lot of pressure on the home team, while Real Madrid was betting on the long crosses from Beckham. The first occasion for the locals arrived at minute 7, Robinho made a solo effort on the right wing, but Lopo was there to clear the danger with his head, two minutes later it was Coloccini who blocked the attempt from the Brazilian star.

Deportivo reacted with a perfect pass that De Guzmán sent to Arizmendi, but the cross for the Madrilian striker passed inches away from the right post. It was the first warning form the visitors. In the next play, Van Nistelrooy received a pass inside the penalty area, but Andrade stole the ball from his feet. The game reduced its velocity during the following minutes as Real Madrid concentrated its efforts on the first goal, while Depor was just waiting in its defensive zone.

And the first goal arrived in a polemic action. A corner-kick ended with Beckham sending a cross from the right, Van Nistelrooy tried to head the ball when he was near to the goal line, instead he hit it with the arm, the ball reached the penalty spot and with all the Depor's defenders reclaiming the infraction, Sergio Ramos appeared to rifle the ball past Aouate. Deportivo protested the action and as result, Cristian was booked by referee Fernández Borbalán.

The goal awoke Deportivo and the Galicians started to push for the equaliser. Lead by Cristian and Estoyanoff, the visitors searched for opportunities, but nothing happened during the last ten minutes of the first half. Caparrós's team was very cautious during the first part of the match, only the goal awoke their spirit. Real Madrid spent difficult times during the last minutes, although Depor never enjoyed a clear chance to score during that particular moment.
SECOND HALF
Real Madrid started the actions pushing for a new goal, after the suffering in the past matches with Recreativo and Espanyol, they knew that a second goal would give them the desired serenity. David Beckham was near to conquering a new goal with a perfectly executed free-kick that hit the right post.

But instead of reaching the tranquility, the Madrilian met the desperation. After the first eight minutes, it was Deportivo who took control of the actions and soon the occasions to score arrived. First it was Estoyanoff with a beautiful scissors-kick that ended in Casillas's hands. Later, the Galicians were near to tie the game in a confusing play that ended with Arizmendi, De Guzmán and Estoyanoff shooting on goal, the ball was finally cleared to a free-kick, it was then when Depor scored the equaliser.

The ball reached Cristian and he made a pass to De Guzmán on the left wing, the Canadian drilled the ball in Real Madrid's area and Joan Capdevila was there to pass Casillas with a slight touch. It was the best moment of Deportivo and it seemed that the visitors were installing the hell at the Bernabeú. But everything changed in a couple of minutes with a new error from Depor's defence.

During a new corner, Cristan was starting a counterattack for Depor, but he lost the ball with Diarra and it reached Bechkam who was incomprehensibly alone after he took the corner, he sent a new and perfect cross that Raúl headed without any problem, Aouate only saw as the ball was entering into his net. The goal killed the will of Deportivo and the rest was a show from the home side.

Caparrós tried to react with the entrance of Bodipo for Estoyanoff, the Guinean striker was the most dangerous man for Depor and he enjoyed a good chance to score, it was individual play that ended with a cross that Casillas contained. But it was Real Madrid who dominated the game during the last 25 minutes. The third goal arrived in a new error of Depor's defence. Coloccini and Lopo weren't able to clear a ball that Raúl fought in the penalty area until the last second, Coloccini fell down, but first he tried to clear the ball out, instead he made a perfect assistance to Van Nistelrooy who just pushed the ball to the back of the net.

The third goal buried the last hopes of the Galicians and both coaches preferred to use the rest of the game as a test for new strategies. Caparrós replaced Sergio and Arizmendi for Verdú and Barragán, while Capello rested Roberto Carlos, Robinho and Van Nistelrooy giving a chance to Cicinho, Guti and Higuaín. Roberto Carlos left the game after a series of polemic plays with Depor's players. The last clear chance was for Depor, once again De Guzmán made a perfect cross from the left, Juan Rodríguez headed the ball, but this time Casillas stopped the effort.

Real Madrid didn't suffer this time as they did in the previous two games with Recreativo and Espanyol. Instead, they enjoyed the last minutes and the crowd at the Bernabeú started to celebrate the victory. Deportivo showed a positive image in the game, they fought and gave a lot of troubles to the home side, especially during the first minutes of the second part.
