ZEROS EVERYWHERE

01 May 2007 -- The goals seems to be a forbidden thing in Deportivo's house. The Galician team has only scored 23 goals after 32 matches in la liga, it's one of the worst marks in the club's history. But if the zero is a common number up front, this digit is basic in defence; Depor has also conquered 16 clean sheets in the 32 liga games. Exactly one every two matches.

The lack of goals is killing the European aspirations of Deportivo, but the solidity at the back is maintaining the dream. The Galician club has only scored 23 goals in 32 liga matches, a mark that continues to be the worst one in la liga and the worst in the club's history since the season 1972/1973. There are other surprising statistic analysing these numbers.

First, dividing the number of minutes played by the number of goals scored, it's possible to obtain a shocking number: 90. This mean that Depor exactly needs an entire game in order to score one single goal. Secondly, dividing the number of points achieved by the number of goals scored, it's possible to obtain the points that each goal represents, the result is also surprising: 1.86. This means that each goal scored by Depor is giving almost two points to the Galicians. This is one of the highest ratios in Europe, especially compared to the ones of the current leaders in the big leagues: Celtic (1.30), Olympique Lyon (1.29), Schalke 04 (1.24), Inter Milán (1.22), Manchester United (1.03), FC Barcelona (1.01) and PSV Eindhoven (1).

Besides, Depor's strikers seem to have forgotten what it is to score a goal. The last two goals in la liga were scored by a defender (Lopo, Vs. Osasuna) and also by a midfielder (Iago, Vs. Nástic). Depor's forwards haven't scored since Adrián reduced the distance against Barcelona at the Camp Nou, this means that the forwards have spent 472 minutes scoreless, a mark that includes the game with Sevilla for copa del rey.

The contribution of Depor's strikers has been miserable compared to other teams. So far, the forwards in Deportivo have only scored eight goals after thirty two matches in la liga: Arizmendi (5), Adrián (1), Taborda (1) and Riki (1). The same thing is lived by Real Sociedad, the other squad that has only scored 23 goals in the tournament. Their strikers had only conquered eight goals in the competition: Días de Cerio (3), Uranga (2), Kovacevic (2) and Germán Herrera (1).

If any team wants to reach Europe, one of the basic things is to be enjoying the striker's help. A fact that's demonstrated taking a look into the statistics of the first four clubs in la liga. Valencia's strikers have scored 35 goals in the tournament, this is the highest contribution in Spain, a mark that has been reached thanks to the impressive numbers of David Villa (13 goals scored) and Fernando Morientes (12). Together this lethal duo has conquered 25 goals in liga, that's the triple than the whole Depor's striking zone. The striking numbers are also high in the other three candidates fighting for the title. Seviilla's strikers have conquered 32, while the ones in Barcelona and Real Madrid have scored 31.

And if the situation in the striking zone is disastrous, the level in defence is marvellous. Deportivo has only allowed 31 goals in 32 matches. A mark that only Getafe (24), Atlético Madrid (26), Sevilla (28), Barcelona (29) and Real Madrid (29) are improving. Also, Depor has been able to conquer 16 clean sheets on this liga season, that means one every two games and the highest number in la liga.

This number of 16 clean sheets in one single season is the best mark in the club since the 2003/2004 campaign, exactly the last time that the team conquered a qualification to the Champions League. At that time, the squad coached by Irureta achieved 17 clean sheets in 38 matches, eight of those were conquered outside of Riazor.

And the 16 clean sheets achieved so far have been very important in order to add the points. 36 of the 43 points achieved so far, were conquered after Depor ended with a big zero in its net. If Depor is able to improve the rhythm, it could be the best defensive season since the 1996/1997 campaign, at that time Depor ended the competition third with only 30 goals allowed.

Deportivo's current situation can only be described as weird. The strikers are living in a desert, while defence is an oasis. Caparrós should notice this, because a better balance in these numbers will probably improve the situation for further seasons, especially to achieve a new participation in Europe. It's not only a matter of having zeros on the scoresheet.

To goal is really hard. Poor attack, capable defense, unsatisfied performance.
And who can be the decisive striker?
