REVIEW: ESPANYOL 1 - DEPORTIVO 3 (LA LIGA)

18 Jun 2007 -- Deportivo ended the season with a smile on its face. The Galician squad achieved its third victory as a visitor and ended 13th in the table. Both squads were playing for nothing and it was a special occasion to see the possible leaders for the next season. Figures like Iago, Cristian, Filipe and Bodipo. Men that were starters in this game. Similar case as Riki who met once again with the goals. It was also an important triumph since Depor did it with ten men on the pitch for 76 minutes.

BEFORE THE GAME
It was the last game of coach Joaquín Caparrós and he surprised with the lineup. Capdevila was left on the bench and his place at the left back was for Filipe Luis. A player that could be important in the next season, if Lendoiro is able to prolong his career in La Coruña. It was also surprising because Iago returned to the starting eleven after several months out. Bodipo was also present in the lineup.

In Espanyol, coach Ernesto Valverde had several casualties, but he was able to count with his offensive 'trivote' Corominas-Luis García-Tamudo. This last player lived a special moment since the club paid a tribute to him for his 112 goals in Primera, a record in the Catalan team.

FIRST HALF
With both teams playing for nothing, the excitement in the stadium was to follow the scores in the other games that were played at the same time. Few occasions and a poor football was seen at Montjuic. Specifially during the first half. Caparrós was using a 4-2-3-1 strategy with Iago as the playmaker, but the Galician youngster didn't appear too much during the first 45 minutes.

But it was Deportivo who took the initiative in the match. First it was Coloccini who received a pass from Arizmendi just to send a right-foot effort that ended in Iraizoz's hands. A few seconds later it was Juan Rodríguez who had an opportunity to score after he sent out a ball that he found in the penalty area.

And everything seemed to change with the expulsion of Jorge Andrade. The Portuguese was sent off in a childhood action. He was booked first for delaying the game, and it seems that he said something to Rubinos Pérez and the referee sent him out immediately. It was probably the last time that Andrade wears Depor's shirt since he is on his way to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Although Depor was playing with ten men, Caparrós's squad continued dominating the actions, but there weren't clear chances to score. Cristian and Sergio made their attempts, but the plays ended in nothing. Espanyol hadn't enjoyed its first occasion to score until minute 25, it was Jarque who headed out a free-kick of Jonatas. Later Arizmendi and Filipe made a play that ended with the Brazilian sending a shot that Iraizoz contained. Zeros at half-time.

SECOND HALF
The second part was totally different and the fans in the stadium started to enjoy good plays. However, Caparrós was trying to be conservative. He replaced Bodipo with Manuel Pablo in a attempt to recover control in his defensive zone. Coloccini moved his position to the centre alongside Lopo, while the Canarian covered the right back, and Arizmendi was left as the lonely striker with Iago behind him.

But the defensive change of Caparrós didn't work. Two minutes after the start, Lopo committed a foul on Raúl Tamudo. The Espanyol captain made a perfect combination with Luis García and he was alone against Aouate when his ex-partner committed the penalty. The same Tamudo took the infraction and increased his number of goals with Espanyol to 113.

Although Depor was with ten men on the pitch, the Galician squad wasn't finished and started to push for the equaliser. Sergio was proving luck from long-distance, while Iago and Cristian were trying to do something with their crosses. And soon the goal arrived, Iago scored the first one after he received a low cross from Cristian. Two minutes later, Sergio conquered a surprising comeback with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.

Espanyol seemed dispersed and confused. But soon the home team started to push for more goals. Corominas received a pass from Luis García, but his low shot was contained with Aoaute. then, Caparrós replaced Sergio with Verdú in attempt to maintain the ball in midfield. But Espanyol continued pushing, Ángel had a new chance after Luís Garcia assisted him, once again the play ended in nothing against a wall of defenders that returned to being solid.

The Catalans continued pushing for the draw, and they were near to achieving it. First Luis García took advantage of a rebound, but his left-foot effort ended in Aoaute's hands. One minute later, Torrejón hit the post after he headed a corner-kick taken by Luis García, this last player was present in all the offensive efforts of Espanyol, but he was unlucky.

Then Caparrós made a decision that changed the destiny of the game. He replaced Arizmendi with Riki and the Madrilian striker decided the situation in six minutes. Once again, Luis García was taking a free-kick near to Depor's area, the ball was cleared by the defenders and it reached Juan Rodríguez, the Andalucian sent a pass to Riki who was alone in midfield, he run a couple of meters just to send a superbly volleyed shot that passed over Iraizoz's head. It was the second time that Depor scores three goals in one single liga game during this season, curioulsy the previous occasion was in the first game against Zaragoza (3-2).

Riki's goal arrived five minutes before the end, but Espanyol didn't give up and the Catalan squad continued searching for its second goal. Corominas, Rufete, Julián, Jarque and the omnipresent Luis García had their chances to score, but Aouate and his defenders were there to stop any new movement in the score. Depor ended the season with a smile on its face.

AFTER THE GAME
Deportivo's victory plus the defeat of Osasuna are allowing the Galician squad to end the season in the 13th place (47 pts). But Caparrós team wasn't able to avoid the worst classification since the squad returned to Primera on the season 1991/1992 (17th). The game also meant the good bye to Arizmendi and Capdevila, although this last one didn't play. Juanma and Duscher are also out of the club.

But all the attention was focused on the first places and in the relegation zone. At the end of the day, Real Madrid conquered its 30th title after they defeated Mallorca at the Bernabeú (3-1), while Celta and Real Sociedad ended in Segunda. The Galician derby will have to wait at least one season in order to be seen once again.
