Scoring problem does exist.... A PROBLEM IN DEPORTIVO: LACK OF AIM

09 Mar 2007 -- Deportivo is ninth in the list of attempts to score after twenty four matches in la liga, but the Galicians possess the third worst mark in terms of shots on goal. This new statistic illustrates one problem that hasn't been mentioned yet: the lack of aim. So far, the 44% of the attempts to score made by Depor have missed the target. A fact that Caparrós should have on mind.

After the first twenty four matches in la liga, Depor has enjoyed of 302 attempts to score (12.6 per game), that's the ninth best mark in la liga. But an interesting statistics appears when this number is analysed. From this 302 attempts, only 157 ended with a shot on goal, 12 were shots blocked, while 133 missed the target.

The mark of 133 shots that went wide represents the second worst record in la liga. Only Atlético Madrid possess a worse statistic (157). A lot has been said about the lack of effectiveness in Depor's striking zone. The main conclusion obtained so far is that the squad isn't generating too many chances to score.

But the statistics demonstrates that the problem might be different: the lack of aim. Deportivo is generating enough chances to score, as it was demonstrated with the 302 attempts made so far. The problem is that the team isn't transforming this attempts into shots on goal. Without shots on target, is evident that the goals won't arrive. The 44% of the attempts to score made by Depor during this season have ended with shots that missed the target, this is the worst percentage between the 20 teams in la liga.

And the problem is more complicated. The mark of 157 shots on goal that Depor has made on this season is the third worst mark in Primera -only Nástic (155) and Real Sociedad (135) have made less shots on target. If we compare the number of goals with the attempts to score and also with the shots on goal, the results are catastrophic. Depor has only scored 19 goals, meaning that the team is only transforming into goals the 12.10% of the shots on target, it also means that Depor is only transforming into goals the 6.29% of the attempts to score. This last percentage is the worst mark in la liga after the one of Real Sociedad (6.25%). This mean that Depor is not only missing the target, it also means that the team is failing to materialise its few shots on goal.

Talking about other clubs, the statistics illustrates very curious cases compared with Deportivo. As example Valencia, Quique Flores's team has only enjoyed of 281 attempts to score (21 less than Depor), but the Valencians have been able to make 164 shots on goal (7 more than Depor), and at the same time they have been able to score 36 goals (almost the double than Deportivo). This mean that Valencia is fulfilling the 22% of its shots on goal, that's almost the double of Depor's effectiveness (12.10%) and its the third best mark in Primera after Barcelona (24.3%) and Sevilla (22.5%). This statistic illustrates very well why Valencia is one of the teams occupying a Champions League place at this point.

As resume, Valencia isn't enjoying of too many attempts to score, but they are just taking advantage of those few opportunities. Meanwhile, Depor is making more attempts to score, but the Galician squad is wasting this occasions sending a big percentage of the balls out (44%), and the situation is worse since Caparrós's team is only fulfilling a small part of the few shots that are reaching the target.
